January can be hard on your landscape here in Marietta, GA. Already in the past week we’ve had freezing temperatures for almost 48 hours straight and this weekend we’ll be getting substantial amounts of rain with temperatures in the 60s. Unfortunately, there is only so much you can do to protect your plants from mother nature. These up and down temperatures may be the detriment of some of your more tender annuals, but your more established plants should be no worse for wear.
While the temperatures are fluctuating, there are still lots of things that you can be doing in your landscape. Here are some landscape tips for January from C&M Residential:
- Prune your established roses. Clip off all of the dead heads, remove the suckers from the base of the bush, and remove any thin, or crossed canes.
- Don’t let the weeds take over your garden. Go ahead and treat them with herbicide before they flower and disperse their seed, growing even more weeds.
- Protect your tender plants as much as you can with frost cloth, bed sheets, or newspaper. When the temperatures are in the single digits, there is only so much this will do, but at least protecting the plants from the wind will increase their chances of survival.
