Prepping Your Lawn For Fall

After another blistering summer here in Atlanta,  the seasons are about to shift! The temperatures will begin to drop and the leaves will change colors, signaling the official start of fall. Many Atlanta lawns are composed of warm season grasses. However, just because your grass will go dormant soon doesn’t mean your yard work is over for the year. If you want to keep your lawn looking great and ready for next spring, remember these maintenance to-do’s this fall.

Here are our 3 biggest tips for you this fall:

Continue Regular Maintenance

You may think because this summer is over, it’s time to slack on lawn care. That isn’t the case. It’s still important to water and mow your lawn throughout fall. We highly recommend watering your lawn early in the morning to give the grass ample time to dry throughout the day. This helps prevent development of fungal infections.

You’ll also want to raise the blade on your lawnmower. Leaving the grass longer ensures your lawn has the nutrients it needs to survive the winter. If you cut your grass too short before winter, it will not hold up through the cold weather as well and will be lacking nutrients come spring.

Let It Breathe

Your grass needs to breathe, so fall is a good time to perform core aeration on your lawn. It’s also important to remove any leaves so they don’t smother the grass underneath them. You can do this by shredding the leaves and using them as mulch or bagging them. Just remember not to miss out on the quintessential fall leaf pile with your kids!

Set Yourself Up For Spring Success

Fall is the time to get your landscaping ready for spring. Late fall is the best time to plant any trees or shrubs in Georgia. This gives them time to settle before the temperatures drop too much and plenty of time to adapt to their new environment before the Georgia heat comes back in the spring. It’s also important to remember to prevent the plants you don’t want in your yard before the grass goes dormant.

Prepping your lawn in the fall can seem like a big task, but we’re here to help!
